Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law.
Psalm 1 says that a man is blessed who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, but he walks in the Torah of Jehovah. There are two ways of life. This includes do’s and don’ts, but is a way of life. One man has a way of life, the other has chosen the wicked path.
God is immutable. His standard does not change and has not changed. He is absolute perfection and eternal. His law is eternal.
Most modern Christians lack context. They have a shallow notion of what Moses is trying to say.
Hatred for God’s law begins in the garden when Eve is standing at the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. She had already walked and was looking at the tree when the serpent showed up. Satan, the greatest antinomian or hater of God’s law was waiting to strike. Adam went along with her hatred of God’s law and reached for authority that wasn’t given to him. He usurped his God given position and began creating his own laws.
Humanism and pride have clouded our view of the goodness of God’s law. People bring their own presuppositions to the Bible and erroneously misinterpret the law.
“The Torah of the Old Testament is much richer than a “code”. In Hebrew it means “to teach or to point the way”. (Exodus 24:12) Both the words “instruction and law” have the same root. Isaiah 2:2-3 “he will teach us His ways”… the teachings of God will go out to all nations. Torah (law) gives instruction that guides the way. In Deuteronomy 28:58 “torah”means to do all the words written in this book. All words are in instructions that point the way. “All the words that God has testified” are good for life. (Joshua 8:31, Deuteronomy 29:29, Deuteronomy 32:46) The Torah is all his testimony that leads people to salvation. They are instructions that pertain to all of life and points to salvation. (Psalm 19:7) Contrary to popular opinion, the law does not beat them down; it points people to God. (Deuteronomy 31:12, Deuteronomy 33:9-10, Psalm78:10) Psalm 37:31 promises that “none of his steps shall slide”. So, Torah is the way you walk or live. Torah is divine instruction that guides his people for their walk in the path of life. (Deuteronomy 32:46 “it is your life”) Our love for God is a covenantal arrangement and he wants us to “live in them”. (Leviticus 18:5)” Dr. Greg Bahnsen, The Grace of Law
31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’ ” (Luke 16:29) This is from the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. The rich man was in hell and wanted to warn his brothers about their fate if they did not have faith in Christ’s salvation and obedience to his ways in the law.
